It is a common knowledge that drains clog up. There are simple ways that can help you unclog a drain. The following are some of them:

  • Use a simple plunger. First, you have to remove the sink strainer. Run a good flow of water then put the plunger cup on the drain, push it down and aggressively pull it up. You have to do this act up and down for several times. Now make a good run down of water to totally flush down the clog and them observe if the water will run down smoothly now.
  • You can also use a safe chemical declogger solution. All you have to do is pour the solution down the drain. Allow to pass for a few minutes then flush the drain with water. Try to do the flushing of water again to see if there are positive changes with the flow of water on the drain. Water not coming back up is a sign that the drain has been unclogged.
  • After plunging and still you notice that water is still not passing through the drain pipe smoothly; you will need to remove the trap underneath. You have to place a bucket that will catch any water that will pass on the sink. Remove the slip nuts of both ends of the trap and remove any clog that you can see along the trap or along the drainpipe. In cases wherein no clog is visible along the pipe, you have to use an auger into the pipe to remove the clog. When everything has been cleared up; it is now time to put back together the ends of the trap before you finally try the sink again.

With the nuisance that a clogged sink can bring, it is imperative that you learn how to unclog a drain by yourself so as not to pay for the high cost of plumbing services for simple jobs like this. In doing so, you will avoid being stunned upon receiving the expensive billing of Mr. Plumber.
